OEM + Inspired Design

Tastefully Compliment.

Why should high end upgrades be limited to modern luxury vehicles?
This is what we asked ourselves when we set out to develop unique, high quality, bespoke enhancements for your beloved pride and joy. As we’re currently witnessing a renaissance in appreciation for younger classic cars, PROTOKRAFT is the first to develop OEM-inspired products designed by practicing car designers to tastefully compliment your car’s original aesthetic.

For our FD3S RX7 Tonneau cover, we noticed the OEM cover wasn’t the easiest to keep clean, not to mention the compromised trunk capacity during those grocery store runs. Being a daily driven FD for years, we had plenty of time to contemplate ways to improve on the original design. We eventually went through numerous ideations in 2D and 3D development- the main challenges being how to develop a form language that doesn’t feel out of place with the original design, surfacing that could work with both Bose and Non-Bose equipped models, and integration of a visual rotor theme that the entire online RX7 community voted for. What started out as a personal project for our own cars turned into something we’re proud to offer to the community. And of course, to make it legal, PROTOKRAFT was born.

  • Sketch it.

It all begins with an idea. Loose hand scribbles on paper or precise digital sketches, getting the idea down is the first step of the creative process.

  • Model it.

Engineered and modeled in Autodesk AliasStudio to OEM standards and tolerance. Multiple variations and revisions are explored.

  • Prototype it.

Physical prototyping is the key to solving fitment issues and confirming design intent maintains the intended quality and gesture. First 3D printed or milled, then adjusted for next iterations. Rinse and Repeat.
